I have always had a soft spot for Kona bicycles of the past, I remember vividly seeing a stab deluxe as a young man and being awestruck with its deep blue and flames paint job. That image has stuck with me and when the opportunity arose to ride a new generation Kona process I jumped at the chance.

I knew from the outset that I wanted my new bike to be something special and it has turned into my favourite build so far. I started with a totally stock bike from Kona and stripped it completely, the only original parts remaining are the frame and seat clamp. A true custom build using hand selected parts chosen for reliability, durability and serviceability.

With the frame disassembled it was sanded back to remove as much paint as possible, then applied every colour I had at my disposal! This frame is going to be eye catching that’s for sure. After multiple bursts of colour and subsequent fades between combinations a series of splatters in complimentary colours were added. Once happy I drew up the process 153 decal, using the 1998 catalog for reference and then added some decals that i modified to suit the bike and laid the final colour down. The frame then went off to a local clear coating specialist.

With the paint complete it was time to protect it with one of the industry’s finest paint protection products, RideWrap. With such a colourful frame it was definitely due an all black finishing kit. The finest parts from Chris King, Hope technology, Race Face, Shimano and OneUp, finished with an awesome top cap from Bentley components.
I absolutely cannot wait to hit the trails on this. A massive thanks to Ben from HDDN media for the incredible photos
